It's a nightmare scenario that happens to millions of Americans every year. However, a leading tax expert, Dan Pilla, reveals one of the IRS's best-kept secrets in his book "How to Get Tax Amnesty." There are four programs in place to help taxpayers who owe tax debt that they cannot pay. Unfortunately, the government often fails to inform taxpayers about these programs. One of the secrets that the IRS doesn't want you to know about is the ability to get an extension of time to pay your taxes. While most people are aware of the filing extension, which allows up to six additional months to file a tax return, they still owe the taxes on the original due date of April 15th. However, there is a little-known form, Form 1127, called "Application for an Extension of Time to Pay Taxes," that can provide taxpayers with up to six additional months to pay their taxes without penalties or interest. Although the interest on the tax debt will still accrue, this can be a significant relief for taxpayers facing financial hardships. In order to qualify for this extension, taxpayers must demonstrate to the IRS that they exercised reasonable business care and prudence in preparing for their tax obligations but were unable to pay due to circumstances beyond their control. This can be done by providing supporting documentation, such as medical reports, to prove a legitimate financial hardship.
